Let’s Start With Why?

Why is this topic of Christ-centered manhood so important? Why the Pointman?

Why does this make a difference?

Let’s start with the first question about why Christ-centered manhood. The day and time we live in is quite contrary to how we as men were intended to lead ourselves or our families. “Social norms and situational morality and ethics” are not what the Bible instructs us to teach our children or even live out ourselves. If we do not focus on God as the standard for our lives and homes, then there truly is no standard by which we gauge our lives. Now if there are ladies reading, feel free to continue. But I want to say that this style of leadership is not the dominant and chauvinistic type of leadership that we see at times. It is the Ephesians 5 type of leadership. Marriage is a partnership of two people with equal value and equity. The man, however is held to a higher standard of making sure this happens.

Ephesians 5:25 – Amplified Version:  Husbands, love your wives (seek the highest good for her and surround her with a caring, unselfish love), just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.

Christ-centered manhood is about using our strength as men to protect, provide and lead with character. We are to live with our family in meekness, kindness and love. This type of leadership stands in opposition to the “social norms” we tend to see. A man deals harshly with his wife or is impatient with his children. 1 Corinthians 16:14 says “Let everything you do be done in love (motivated and inspired by God’s love for us).  Use our strength to protect and our love to make a difference!

Why the analogy of a Pointman? Pointmen are trained to lead their platoon through battles and recognize traps, ambushes and other sources of danger. It is my desire to see every man develop these skills. The ability to foresee challenges, be in tune to everyone in your household, know what is going on at all times. Knowing how to pray and speak the Word of God over your family. This will prepare you for the future and help you overcome challenges and defeat the enemy on your battlefield.

Why does it make a difference? Because I want men to know that what you saw growing up may not have been the right example, but you can break that cycle today. None of us had a perfect example but I was able to make changes and see a better way. It is not easy and it takes time and effort, but you can do it. You can be that pointman that walks before his family, surveying the landscape ahead and protecting them from the dangers that lurk in our world. Whether it is drug abuse, alcoholism, pornography, gang life.. Whatever the pitfall is, you can lead through the challenges to success on the other side.

I hope you will continue to follow my blog as we talk about topics each month. I also hope you will leave me comments and thoughts as we go along. We are stronger together than when we are divided.

Many Blessings,

David Harris
